Septeto Habanero
Founded in 1920
The Son was born at the end of the XIXth Century in the eastern provinces of Cuba. The Son is the most popular dancing musical genre which characterizes which characterizes Cuban people. This misical genre was taken to the western part of the country and spread all over by the army in 1909. At the beginning it was considered low-class music. Sexteto Habanero influenced so much that it bécame popular in 1920. Then sextetos and septetos came to be the most fashionablen bands. Famous sones such as “A la Loma de Belén” To the Mountain of Belen and “Papa Montero” Dad Montero were hitssince they appeared.
The Septeto Habanero is considered by musicologists and specialists the most genuine and one of the most outstanding bands of the Cuban popular music because of its sound peculiarities and timbre personality as well as the way it respcts and preserves its original repertoire.
Guillermo Castillo and Gerardo Martinez founded Sexteto Habanero in 1920. They added a trumpet and the band turned into Septeto Habanero in 1927. La Botija – a pottery recptacle used to transport liquids during the colonial period was incorporated to the band having the function of a bass and also marked certain rhythmical patterns. La Botija was substituted by the counter bass in 1924. La Maldita Timidez The Damned Shyness was the first Son ever recorded. That record belongs to Septeto Habanero and it was made in New York City for RCA Victor in Octuber 29, 1924.
The Septeto Habanero has recorded more than 85 discs and has participated in different motion pictures and films such as Puerto del Infierno, Esto es Sabor This is Real Taste, Las Raices del Son - Son Roots, Carnet de Bord a Cuba 52 – Boarding Card to Cuba 52, La Momia – The Mommy the latest version by Universal Studios in 1999 as well as a film which pays homage to Benny More. Its huge repertoire has been enriched for 90 years of a successful career. It was first band to record inmortal hits such as Mama Ine, Tres Lindas Cubanas – Three Pretty Cuban Girls, ¿ Como esta Miguel? – How is Miguel Doinng?, and Papa Montero – Dad Montero, among 180 songs, that is the reason why Septeto Habanero is updated, popular, and in fashion . Recen thits are Voy a la Calle Vapor – I Go to Vapor Street, Sin Tun Ganga, Y que Sabrosito pa Gozar – It is Cool to Have Fun, Orgullo de los Soneros – Son Musicians Pride, Revive la Ilusion – Make Illusion Live Again, Desde el Dia en que te Vi – Since the very Day I Saw You. The HABANA 99 CD was awarded with a Golden Disc in Portugal because more than 30 000 copies were sold. All these songs have been very popular and occupied remarkable numbers in international hit paredes. Septeto Habanero has toured almost the world over spread the Cuban Son, Guaracha, Afro, Bolero, and Guaguanco wherever it has gone.

Opinions about Septeto Habanero
“….. There was an intercive Americanizaciotion Influecing popular music by then. That s´ the way things were like when Septeto Habanero brought Son to all of us. Son nothing to do with imported foreing fashions. Its performance Hill never be rememberred enough ……. Son from Oriente was surprising, rare, almost unknown. In other words, Son had been forgotten.
It was the Cuban musical genre to oppose adquately the jazz offensive. “ A la Loma de Belen , “ Cabo de la Guardia”, “ Mujeres no se Duerman “, “ Cuatro Palomas “, “ Papa Montero”, and other songs which belongend to the Sexteto s´ repertoire became popular from one day to the other…..”
Alejo Carpentier (writer)
“….. Son or Sones which influenced me were the ones placed by Sexteto Habanero when I was young at the end of the 20 s´ and later ….”
Nicolas Guillen (National Poet of Cuba)
“…… Another outstanding and laborious Cuban musicogist, Idilio Urfe, agrees with the idea tha two remarkable moments in Son expansion are, First, when componer Jose Urfe incorporated the Son rhythm to the final part to the popular Danzon “ El Bombin de Barreto” (Barreto s´ HAT – 1910 ).
The rhythmical and cadential eastern style got to Havana.
Second in 1920 Sexteto Habanero came out as a mixture of other Son bands.”
Angel Augier ( Musical Historiographer)
“ As a matter of Fac., according to the autor s´ opinión, Sexteto Habanero did such a musical work which was follwed by hundreds of Son musicians among other. The it came to be the leader of the Son players and singers.”
Maria Teresa Linares (Musicologist)
Septeto Habanero
Founded in 1920
“ The creation of Sexteto Habanero (1920) and its complete leadership are the most significant facts in the History of Cuban Son. That s´the point where most of the Son scholars coincide. The awards its has been honoured with, international tours around the world, recordings, famous songs, and films are witnesses of Sexteto Habanero s´history “
Senen Suarez ( Musician, Composer, and Leader of his own band )
Septeto Habanero plays the Cuban Son roots since its very beginnings in a way difieren from the other bands. Because of its own performing quality Septeto habanero has deserved to be “ The Proud of Son Musicians”.
